Boost Confidence with Nipple Surgery

For many people, abnormal nipples can be a major source of embarrassment and make them feel self-conscious about being shirtless, both in public and in intimate situations. Fortunately, if you’re unhappy with the size of your nipples or areolas, nipple surgery could be a simple solution to permanently improve your self-confidence and self-image.

What Is Nipple Surgery?

Nipple surgery, also known as nipple and areola reduction or reconstruction, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of enlarged or stretched nipples and/or areolas. The procedure is often used to restore the appearance of the nipples after pregnancy, weight changes, or the effects of aging.

How Is Nipple Surgery Performed?

The standard procedure for nipple surgery is relatively straightforward. Usually, the skin of the areola and/or nipple is carefully adjusted to create the desired size. Some excess skin may also be removed if necessary.

Nipple surgery can also be performed to correct inverted nipples or remove accessory nipples and areolas:

  • Inverted Nipple Repair - To repair an inverted nipple, the surgeon will make a tiny incision across the base of the nipple, which will be used to release the duct contraction. They will then use sutures to secure the nipple into a normal, everted position.
  • Accessory Nipple Removal - Some people have extra nipples and areolas, commonly known as accessory nipples. These accessory nipples can be removed by simply excising skin and tissue in the area and stitching the skin back together.

Your Nipple Surgery Consultation

To begin the process of your nipple surgery, you’ll need to have a consultation with Dr. Landford. She will go over the procedure with you and listen to your overall aesthetic goals. The doctor will also answer any questions you have about the surgery. If you decide to move forward, Dr. Landford will work with you to create a customized treatment plan that suits your personal needs.

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

Your nipple surgery will be performed as an outpatient procedure with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The specifics of the surgery will depend on your unique treatment plan and what you’re hoping to accomplish. Typically, Dr. Landford will begin by making small incisions in or around the nipples. She will then adjust and/or remove skin and tissue as necessary to make the desired changes to your nipples and/or areolas. Finally, she will use stitches to secure the adjusted skin and close the incisions. On average, nipple surgery takes around an hour to complete, and you’ll be able to return home a couple of hours after it’s finished. However, someone else will need to drive.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Typically, patients need to rest for between one and two weeks after undergoing nipple surgery. You may experience some pain, soreness, and sensitivity after the procedure, and resting frequently will be important for the first week of recovery. However, you should start taking light walks around the house as soon as you feel up to it. To ensure proper healing, strenuous exercise should be avoided for six to eight weeks.

Am I a Candidate for Nipple Surgery?

Adults who are unsatisfied with the size or appearance of their nipples could be good candidates for nipple surgery. To be an ideal candidate for the procedure, you should:

  • Be in generally good physical health
  • Have enlarged or stretched nipples and/or areolas
  • Have inverted nipples
  • Have one or more accessory nipples
  • Have realistic expectations for the procedure
  • Not be currently pregnant or nursing
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Have the desire to reduce the size or adjust the appearance of your nipples and/or areolas
