How often should I have a skin care treatment?
We usually recommend having a treatment once a month for correction or maintenance purposes. Some patients are able to back down to every 6 weeks once they get their skin to that happy place. Over the course of time, improvement in the tone and texture of the skin is revealed.
What treatment is best? Microdermabrasion, SkinPen or Chemical Peel?
The answer really depends on the skin type and the patient’s main concerns. Each of these skin treatments help address several skin concerns such as: discoloration, wrinkles, acne, dark spots and dullness, etc. Because there are so many factors, it is best to schedule a skin care consultation to determine the best regimen for your skin. If you are already a patient, skin care consultations are complimentary!
How do you address ethnic skin? Is it safe to treat skin of color with a chemical peel?
Ethnic skin comes in a wide variety of colors and textures. Whether it is skin of African, Asian, or Latino heritage, “ethnic” skin does act differently and is typically more sensitive to treatments. Dr. Porter has written several book chapters about chemical peels, including 2 on treating skin of color. The key is to take a stepwise approach and create a regimen that addresses the concerns, which for these patient populations usually involves treatment of dark spots. Other patients have issues with acne and signs of aging. Whatever the concern, it is best to see a physician that treats patients from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds to ensure that they are aware of the potential complications and how to avoid them.
