At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, we pride ourselves on offering Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) as one of the most effective non-surgical methods for natural hair restoration. We love that PRP has been proven to improve the thickness and density of hair without the need for surgery. We have a strong focus on patient comfort at Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, and our multi-modality numbing procedure ensures that the treatment itself is painless and only takes ~30 minutes to complete. Since there is no downtime after the treatment, our patients are free to go about their day and wash their hair in 24 hours.
What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy?
The human body has the power to heal itself, and we are only now starting to understand how we can use that to our advantage to combat hair loss. With PRP hair restoration, we use a combination of microneedling and a hyper-concentrated portion of your own blood to reintroduce growth factors and increase the blood supply to your scalp. Through a series of treatments, we are able to encourage the growth of hair that has gone dormant and increase the caliber of miniaturized hairs. After decades of research on the use of this technology in hair loss, PRP therapy has been proven to be a natural method for hair restoration.
Why see a Hair specialist for your PRP treatments?
Dr. Sitapara specializes in hair restoration and can tailor your approach based on your scalp and follicles. His patients trust him to customize hair loss solutions because he does not believe in a “cookie-cutter” approach to hair restoration. He is passionate about hair loss research and attends world conferences for hair restoration, so he can provide the very best care for his patients. He frequently combines medical management with PRP and can provide hair transplantation options for patients that have more significant hair loss.
How Does Microneedling Contribute to Hair Restoration?
As the name suggests, microneedling introduces “micro” trauma to the scalp at a depth between 1-2 millimeters (hair follicles live at ~4 millimeters so there is no risk to your native hair). This increases blood flow to the scalp and makes it more receptive to the PRP therapy. It also helps to activate the platelets and signal them to release their growth factors. Dr. Sitapara commonly uses microneedling at the same time as PRP hair restoration in order to maximize your potential gains.
Who is an Ideal Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?
Both men and women with mild to moderate hair loss are candidates for PRP hair therapy. Those with more significant hair loss or those with focal areas of hair loss within the hairline or crown may be better candidates for hair transplantation. During your hair consultation with Dr. Sitapara, he will examine your scalp and hair loss pattern, to customize the best possible approach based on your goals.
How Long Does it Take To See The Results of PRP Therapy?
PRP treatments are done as a series of 4 treatments spaced one month apart. Due to the time it takes for new hairs to sprout and existing hairs to grow in caliber, it typically takes several months after the first treatment to start noticing results. Since hair loss is a progressive process that gets worse over time, studies have shown that patients can best maintain their results by continuing an isolated PRP treatment every 6 to 12 months.
How is PRP different from a hair transplant?
Platelet Rich Plasma can help revitalize miniaturized hairs into strong, healthy adult hairs and significantly decrease shedding. If there are dormant hair follicles under the surface of the skin, PRP can also provide the “fertilizer” to encourage new growth. The limitation of PRP is that it cannot grow hair in areas where the follicle is already gone. Once hair follicles are gone, the only option is to replace them with new follicles during hair transplantation. Click HERE to learn more about hair transplantation.
