What Is Sculptra Aesthetic?

Sculptra Aesthetic is a facial injectable treatment that promotes the skin’s natural collagen production. Collagen is a fibrous protein that acts as the skin’s inner structure and helps maintain its shape. As we age, we lose our collagen stores, resulting in skin laxity and dehydration. Sculptra in Maryland works gradually, resulting in a more youthful-looking appearance without making it look like you’ve had work done.

Sculptra Aesthetic (injectable poly-L-lactic acid) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a treatment indicated for the correction of shallow to deep nasolabial fold (smile lines) contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles, which are treated with the appropriate injection technique in healthy people. To learn more about this treatment, reach out and set up your consultation at our Bethesda, Maryland office today.

Is Sculptra Right for Me?

Your body naturally produces collagen and elastin to help keep your skin looking youthful and hydrated. These compounds enable your skin to retain moisture more effectively, so you can retain those attractive and supple qualities. The problem is, however, that your body will produce less and less of these compounds as you age. This is a natural part of the aging process and frequently results in a sagging or drooping of the skin, which can directly contribute to the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

How Does Sculptra Work?

Once injected, Sculptra is gradually and naturally absorbed deep within the dermis layer of the skin to promote collagen production. Then, rebuilt collagen strands begin to restore the loss of facial volume over time. Because of this, Sculptra is different from hyaluronic acid fillers, which work immediately to fill in lines and folds.

Sculptra Aesthetic is the only facial injectable that works gradually with results that can last up to two years. A treatment regimen of Sculptra Aesthetic requires an average of three injection sessions over a few months. Occasionally, we combine the Sculptra treatments with other fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm if treatment is needed in other areas, such as the lips or superficial lines, which Sculptra does not treat.

Why Collagen Matters

70% of our skin is composed of collagen. As we age, collagen production decreases. In fact, starting at age 18, we lose about 1% of collagen per year. Gradually, the skin loses its youthful bounce, which leads to a loss of volume and creates wrinkles and folds.

Some lifestyle changes you can make to slow collagen loss include minimizing sun exposure and wearing sunscreen, quitting smoking, and reducing sugar intake. Dr. Porter also recommends patients use Sente Contour Pressed Serum or LifeLine ProPlus Daily Defense to assist with collagen production.

Your Treatment Experience

Initial Consultation

Before we get started, you’ll visit our Bethesda, Maryland offices for an informative in-person consultation. This will give us the chance to learn about your cosmetic goals and get to know your physical characteristics, so we can be sure that we’re guiding you to the treatment modality that is right for you. We’ll answer any questions you might have about this procedure, and give you a clear idea of what you can expect.

Your Treatment

Sculptra injections are quick and easy, and your injection session will take less than a full hour to complete. We’ll help you stay comfortable with the use of a topical anesthetic, and the injections will be performed with a very fine-gauge needle to keep the entire process as tolerable as possible. Injections will be made according to your customized treatment pattern and you’ll be able to return to your routine as soon as they’re over.

Recovery and Results

After the treatment is over, you’ll experience a bit of redness and tenderness in the treatment area. While some patients might opt to lie low for a day or two after their Sculptra injections, many of our patients feel comfortable diving directly back into their normal activities as soon as the session is over. We’ll give you everything you need to maintain your results and will work with you to schedule maintenance appointments.
