What is a facelift?

A facelift is a surgical procedure done to correct loose facial muscles and sagging skin. While muscle relaxers like Botox and dermal fillers like Juvederm can also be used to tighten facial skin, their effects are temporary and usually wear off after a few months. The VISIA® Complexion Analysis is a technology used to analyze a person’s skin and compare it to that of other people their age. The machine looks a bit like a high-tech photo booth, and the patient places their head in the machine, so the technology can collect images of their face. The technology then analyzes the patient’s skin according to eight criteria: wrinkles, UV spots, texture, spots, red areas, porphyrins, pores and brown spots. Porphyrins are accumulations of natural oils and bacteria. The device then provides percentile scores based on how the patient’s skin compares that of other people of the same age, sex and skin type. A high score indicates healthy skin, while a low score indicates skin with problems. The VISIA® machine can store the results of the analysis, so the doctor can use it during follow-up appointments to check the patient’s progress. The doctor will then recommend a skin care regimen based on the results of the analysis, and they will also suggest skin care products they believe would be most helpful.
