Rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is a procedure that requires meticulous surgical skill as well as a keen eye for aesthetic detail. This is because changing the shape of the nose by mere millimeters can alter the look of the patient’s entire face. In addition, rhinoplasty must be customized to meet the unique needs of each person. A patient of Asian descent does not have the same anatomical and aesthetic needs as someone of, say, Latin descent. For these reasons, it is incredibly important for individuals pursuing rhinoplasty to turn to a plastic surgeon with extensive experience performing rhinoplasty procedures for patients of various ethnic backgrounds. One such surgeon is Dr. Jennifer Parker Porter. As the author of several book chapters dedicated to the topic of rhinoplasty, board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Porter understands the aesthetic concerns of her patients, no matter what their ethnic background is.
Although Dr. Porter evaluates each patient’s nasal structure on an individual basis, she often prefers to use the “open,” or external, approach to rhinoplasty when performing the procedure for someone of African American, Asian, Middle Eastern or Latin heritage. This is because these patients tend to have thick skin and often desire increased definition throughout the tip of the nose. Using the open approach allows for further contouring of the nose, which becomes increasingly apparent as the nose heals. However, the open approach is not always the most appropriate treatment option for these patient populations, and, again, each patient’s consultation and examination findings determine the best surgical approach. Note: It may take as long as 18 months for the nose to heal completely and reach its final shape.
When Dr. Porter performs rhinoplasty — for any patient — her goal is to correct the patient’s aesthetic concern while preserving the distinct characteristics of the nose that make that person unique and beautiful. She wants all her patients to look like an improved version of themselves.
