Benefits Associated with Facial Exfoliation

There are myths and misconceptions surrounding facial exfoliation, also referred to as facial scrubbing. Our skin generally sheds off and renews itself about every 30 days. Exfoliation tackles this problem by getting rid of the skin dead cells. At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery we offer facial exfoliation treatments to help you keep your skin rejuvenated and refreshed at all times.

Exfoliating Delays Symptoms of Aging

None of us are going to live forever, but that doesn’t mean we want to age faster. With age, your skin tends to sag and get wrinkled due to the rampant dying of skin cells which accumulate. Exfoliating helps with getting rid of the dead cells to retain healthy, glowing skin.

It Evens Skin Texture

Do you feel like your skin is rough and dry even though you cleanse and moisturize daily? Facial exfoliation helps to get rid of stubborn skin cells that make the skin dry and rough allowing the skin to feel smoother and softer.

It Reduces Acne Breakouts

Victims of acne and pimple breakouts should try exfoliating with the right products. Scrubbing unclogs blocked pores that lead to acne and pimples on the skin. Once the excess oil and dirt are extracted from the pores, the acne will reduce significantly.

It Allows the Skin to Absorb Skincare Products

You are probably wondering why you are experiencing the results of some skin care products that have worked properly on your friends. Without facial exfoliation, the pores on the skin remain blocked. With blocked pores means the skin care products you apply will not be well absorbed into the deeper layer of your skin. By unblocking the pores, it gives a better track for the products to penetrate giving the best nourishment.

It Soothes Itchiness

That itchy feeling that keeps switching places can be annoying. Facial exfoliating may help soothe the itchiness by getting rid of the dirt trapped causing the discomfort. Exfoliating the skin regularly leaves the skin clean and free from itchiness. After facial exfoliation, the treatment should be coupled by moisturizing to optimize the results. It is advisable that you choose your exfoliators wisely. With the market flooded with products, some could be harmful to the skin. Some home remedies such as sugar, sea salt, honey, and apple vinegar among others do an equally great job in facial exfoliation. Exfoliate regularly to maintain beautiful skin. Experts suggest once or twice a week will keep your face glowing. Contact our office today to schedule your consultation! Our team of professionals will help you develop a personalized skincare treatment plan. We are conveniently located in Bethesda, MD.

Non-Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Options

facial-rejuvenationSurgery is not always required to improve facial appearance. There are several non-surgical treatments available in the Washington, DC area that can produce amazing results and don't require a lot of recovery downtime. These non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments, offered at Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, have helped many people achieve the appearance that they want. Injectables BOTOX®, Restylane®, and JUVÉDERM® are just a few of the popular injectables that numerous people have used to rejuvenate their skin. Many of these injectables are formulated to smoothen facial wrinkles and lines and improve skin elasticity. Injections can be administered to certain areas of the face where skin is showing signs of aging or other cosmetic flaws. Each treatment may last from a few months to one or more years before additional injections are needed.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel involves a chemical solution that is applied to the face. This solution causes the top layers of skin to peel away and reveal the newer, healthier underlying skin. This treatment is often effective in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines and sun damage. It is also sometimes used to treat acne and minimize the appearance of certain scars. Different strengths of chemical peels can be used to treat moderate to severe facial blemishes.

This non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment is intended to stimulate collagen production so that skin elasticity can be improved. We use the DermaPen3® and the Eclipse MicroPen™, the two best microneedling devices on the market, to stimulate collagen production and healing within the facial skin. In addition to improving the skin’s buoyancy, microneedling can stimulate hair growth and reduce the appearance of scars. These non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments have resulted in many positive outcomes for patients and can be completed without having to undergo surgery. Rejuvenate and Brighten Your Skin with Fraxel Repair

Age tends to creep up on us without warning and, before we know it, the signs of aging are visible to both us and the outside world. While our gray hairs may easily be covered with various shades of hair dye, fine lines, dull skin, large pores, wrinkles, age spots, scars, and deeper wrinkles are sure to tell everyone about our actual age. While aging certainly comes with its benefits, it may also damage your confidence and self-esteem as an individual. If your fine lines and wrinkles are too telling of your age, rejuvenate and brighten your skin with Fraxel repair. Fraxel repair is a cosmetic procedure that works to diminish the appearance of sun spots, age spots, fine lines, deep wrinkles, pores, and will also brighten your skin. This procedure works well for any skin type and will make a significant difference in just a few treatments. If you are considering a cosmetic procedure to treat your signs of aging, here are a few ways in which Fraxel skin repair will benefit you. 1) Fraxel repair is completed through a targeted laser treatment that helps to improve your skin’s texture in just 4-6 treatments at about two hours each. If you measure all the time spent applying anti-aging creams each night, the time-saving benefits alone are worth the trouble. 2) If you have skin discoloration that is becoming worse as you age, Fraxel lasers will zap that discoloration away in no time. In fact, Fraxel treatments are proven to show dramatic results about a month after having just a few treatments. 3) Fraxel repair works to eliminate acne scarring, while simultaneously brightening your skin tone. This will help to give you a more fresh, well-rested, and youthful appearance while helping you to stay that way. 4) The Fraxel repair treatment is performed with topical anesthetic, meaning that you will not feel a thing as the lasers work to perfect your skin. Additionally, the recovery time is minimal and you will be able to safely go out in public roughly three days after the procedure has been performed. 5) Fraxel repair treatments work to target specific problem areas and only focus on one section of skin at a time. If you have one specific scar that you are concerned about, this will work beautifully for you. However, you can receive a full-face treatment if that is what you prefer to have done. If you are seeking to treat your skin imperfections, consider Fraxel skin repair to help rejuvenate and brighten your skin. Remove Dead Skin Cells with Dermaplaning

dermaplaning-3 A buildup of dead skin cells on the facial skin is associated with acne, fine lines, a rough skin texture, and uneven pigmentation. It causes a person to have an overall dull complexion. One of the best ways to remove dead skin cells is with a treatment called dermaplaning. We invite you to learn more about it. Dermaplaning involves using a surgical scalpel to gently scrape away dead skin cells from the top layers of your facial skin. One of our skin care professionals will gently perform this treatment on areas where you have a lot of dead skin cells built up. This provides the immediate benefit of revealing the fresh and healthy skin underneath. It provides the longer-term benefit of encouraging your skin to produce new skin cells at a quicker pace. One of the benefits that dermaplaning offers is that no harsh chemicals are used. This is good for individuals in the Washington, DC area who have sensitive skin. It is also great for people who do not qualify for treatments that involve the use of chemicals. For example, most pregnant women do not qualify for chemical peels. Another benefit that dermaplaning offers over other exfoliation methods is that it removes peach fuzz from the face. After you have dermaplaning performed and the peach fuzz has been removed, you will notice that your skin is a lot smoother. Makeup goes on a lot easier, and you are likely to notice that you do not have as many acne breakouts. You do not have to worry about peach fuzz growing in thicker and darker. When it grows back, it will look exactly as it did before. While dermaplaning definitely has some major benefits, it is not right for everyone. If you have extremely sensitive skin, this is something that you should mention to the skin care professional who is working with you during the consultation. Dermaplaning is a great option for individuals who want to remove dead skin cells and enjoy healthy skin. Talk to our staff at Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery in Bethesda, MD to learn more. Care and Treatment After A Sunburn

I must admit that most of my job is centered around the treatment and prevention of aging and finding ways to rejuvenate our bodies as we age gracefully through time. As many of you know, using a daily sunscreen is a must; not just during the summer months but year round.  Even when the day is overcast, you are still being exposed to UV rays and your skin is susceptible to sun damage. Excessive sun exposure over time can lead to premature aging and can increase your risk of skin cancer.  However, from time to time we don’t always remember the rules and find ourselves in trouble. I am guilty of this as well.  As we transition from Spring to Summer I wanted to share some tips to take care of your skin when you have had excessive sun exposure. If you experience a sunburn, your skin may be red and painful to touch. The first recommendation is to go indoors and start using cool cold compresses to the affected skin areas.  I recommend the 20-20 rule; 20 minutes of cool compresses on the skin and then giving your skin a break for 20 minutes. Next, start moisturizing your sunburned areas. I recommend using moisturizers that are fragrance and dye free because they are less likely to irritate your injured skin. Use a moisturizer immediately after bathing and remember to reapply throughout the day. While it’s tempting to pick your dry skin, allow your skin to naturally exfoliate to prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation. For persistent pain and discomfort, you can take over the counter ibuprofen which can assist in reducing swelling and inflammation. In the short term, you can use over the counter mild topical steroids (i.e. 1% hydrocortisone) to affected areas which can help speed up the recovery. Increasing your water intake and staying hydrated afterwards is paramount. Hydrating will plump up your skin cells that have been traumatized by the sun damage. If you experience worsening symptoms of fever, skin blistering, and/or increase in pain and swelling then it is time to see a medical professional. If you cannot get an early appointment, go to your nearest urgent care center or emergency department to be evaluated. Remember these 3 main tips for sun protection:
  • Stay indoors during the peak sunlight hours: 10am-4pm
  • Cover your arms and legs and head with light colored clothing and hats.
  • After application, reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours during the day when outdoors and every 30 minutes if you are in water.
At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, We wish everyone a safe and healthy summer!

Non-Surgical Under-Eye Treatment

One of the most common questions we get is “what can help my under-eye area that does not involve surgery?” The answer always depends on the patient’s anatomy. As such, the question is not a one size fits all. There are some simple fixes that don’t involve a trip to the office. Rest (a good night sleep) is one of the keys to having a youthful under-eye area. Repeated periods of burning the candle on both ends can lead to persistent under-eye puffiness. Adequate hydration also impacts this area. Medical grade skin creams (Sente’, LifeLine, and Neocutis) that have caffeine help to immediately improve/tighten the eye area while other ingredients help to moisturize and balance skin tone. Eye creams are beneficial to integrate into your daily routine; consistent use will prevent wrinkles. For those with crepey skin of the lower eye lid, light Botox treatments work well. The dosage for this area is light to prevent distorting the natural shape of the eye. The low dosage does mean the improved result will not last for an extensive time. This is a great add-on to your next Botox treatment. *Only 4-6 units are needed. For some patients with under eye puffiness combined with loss of cheek volume, fillers can be a great option. Fillers such as Restylane work well for the tear trough area. Juvederm offers Voluma which is a nice option for cheek volume, as well as Restylane Lyft or Radiesse! Subtle volumizing creates a youthful appearance. The volume can be added in stages for those wary of the “chipmunk” look! Call us to discuss your concerns and schedule your appointment, we can create your individualized treatment plan. Right now, syringes of Radiesse are discounted $200.00 off. *Quantities are limited, don’t delay in scheduling your appointment.

What is Glytone Cream Used to Treat?

When it comes to your skin care regimen, you are bombarded with products. There are so many options out there. It can be difficult to narrow down the list and find the right products for you. Glytone® cream is a popular option that many people choose for the benefits of glycolic acid. Make it part of your routine if you are looking for an effective way to rejuvenate your skin. You may not be able to stop time, but using this cream as a regular part of your daily routine can help you to slow down the aging process for a little while. Understanding Glytone® Cream Glytone® cream is intended to be used with a variety of products for the best results. When you apply this cream to your face, it exfoliates it. You'll shed that old, dead skin that makes your skin look dull. As the old skin cells are wiped away, the lower layer of healthy skin cells will be revealed. At the same time, you will be able to soften the appearance of fine lines and discoloration in your skin. The glycolic acid that is contained in this cream is helpful in two ways. It exfoliates and it triggers the production of collagen. Collagen is the substance that helps your skin to be firm and elastic in your younger years. Production decreases as you get older. Apply this cream on a regular basis and you will see a more youthful face when you catch your reflection in the mirror. From the Desk of Dr. Porter

Rhinoplasty Recovery: A week of downtime One of the most common questions we get regarding rhinoplasty (nose job) is “How long will it take for me to recover?”  Many patients imagine a month or so of unsightliness.  This is far from true! The majority of our patients are able to return to social activities within days of taking off the cast, which occurs approximately 1 week after surgery.  At that point, depending on the person, there may be a faint yellowish discoloration due to bruising, below the eyes, or there may be no bruising at all by that point.  The amount of swelling is highly variable, but the majority are able to appear socially acceptable within a day or so after the cast is removed.   The bruising is able to be covered by makeup if the patient needs to return to work during that time.  Arnica cream used in the postoperative period can expedite the resolution of the bruising. Likewise, fresh pineapple is a natural way of lessening bruising and swelling in the postoperative period. Additionally, a healthy diet full of proteins and vegetables gives the body energy and substrate to allow healing to take place. Finally, lowering salt intake helps to decrease swelling during the early phases of healing. While it still takes a full year to get to that final result, a socially acceptable result happens very soon after surgery.  Patients typically have swelling in the tip of the nose that makes the surgical changes difficult to see early on.  As the swelling goes down, the nose slowly takes shape to make the  desired change. Even those patients that undergo an open, or external, approach to the surgery will have a nice early recovery.  For revision rhinoplasty patients, the experience is similar. During the surgery, we take time to ensure that the bruising and swelling do not get out of control, which leads to favorable outcomes with a speedy recovery.  Proper planning and careful analysis allow for the surgery to move along at a swift pace; these factors also contribute to diminished swelling. During your consultation, we can give you an idea of what to expect during your healing based on your anatomy and skin thickness. Schedule your appointment with Dr. Jennifer Parker Porter  to learn more about the possibilities regarding rhinoplasty.

Summer Skin Care Tips and Treatments for Glowing Skin

Do you want to enjoy radiant, glowing skin this summer? Would you like to minimize noticeable lines and wrinkles? Dr. Jennifer Parker Porter of Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery can help. Here, she offers tips for beautiful, healthy skin, and suggests a few professional treatments to help your skin look its best.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Sun protection is key for beautiful, healthy skin, especially during the summer when the sun is most prevalent. If you’re going outside during the day, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 25+, and re-apply every two hours. For extra protection on the delicate facial skin, wear a wide-brim hat and wraparound sunglasses. If possible, stay out of the sun between the hours of 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, when the sun’s rays are strongest. Don’t forget about super-sensitive areas such as the lips (use a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher) and the scalp (try a sunscreen spray along your part). If you like products that multi-task, streamline your routine with makeup products like foundation and powder that contain SPF. Mineral makeup is a great choice that offers coverage and protection in one product. Did you accidentally sunburn? Soothe irritated skin with cooling gels and balms, and treat yourself to a glass of red wine. Studies have shown that resveratrol, which is found in the skin of red grapes, can minimize redness from sunburns.

Slough Off Dead, Dull Skin Cells

Exfoliation is essential for smooth, soft skin. Use a gentle exfoliating scrub one to three times per week to get rid of dead, dull skin cells and shed previous sun damage. Exfoliation also helps your skincare and makeup products penetrate the skin deeper and last longer. After exfoliating, use a rich hydrating cream to lock in moisture. Be extra diligent about sun protection on newly exfoliated skin. Chemical peels are another way to slough off dead, dull skin cells. A professional chemical peel evens out discoloration, minimizes wrinkles and improves the overall health and hydration of your skin. The skin care experts at Dr. Porter’s office offer a variety of chemical peels, including PCA Peels and Vitalize® and Rejuvenize® Peels, to address various skin concerns.

Tweak Your Product Routine

The right combination of products can stave off wrinkles and lines and minimize existing sun-related skincare problems. Ask Dr. Porter about the Environ and Lifeline product lines, which are more potent than over-the-counter skin care products. She can recommend products to suit your unique skin care needs.

Consider Botox Treatment

Do you have noticeable lines and wrinkles from years of squinting into the sun or furrowing your brow? Botox can minimize these imperfections. Treatment with the cosmetic injectable is quick, convenient and practically painless. Results last up to three months the first time, and five to six months with repeated treatments.

Try a Laser Skin Procedure

If you have moderate to severe areas of skin damage (i.e., dark sun spots, age spots, sun-induced redness, deep creases or folds), you might be a candidate for laser skin rejuvenation. Dr. Porter uses the Fraxel re:pair® laser system to remove damaged skin cells and stimulate the body’s natural healing process for fresh, glowing skin. The Time Machine Procedure® is another great alternative for improving skin texture.
