At Chevy Chase Facial Plastic Surgery, we have been performing PRP for facial rejuvenation for years. We are also pleased to offer PRP injections as a nonsurgical option for early hair loss and hair thinning. PRP is platelet rich plasma that has been found to be rich in growth factors and cells that promote stem cell activation and promote tissue regeneration. It has been used for over 20 years across disciplines including sports medicine, orthopedics, and plastic surgery to promote wound healing. In hair restoration in particular, PRP has been found to stimulate hair stem cells which aid in follicle growth and provide a nutrient dense environment for hair regeneration.
This procedure is performed in the comfort of our office. Blood is drawn and placed into a centrifuge. This machine separates and activates the platelets from the rest of the blood cell components. After a local anesthetic is used to numb the scalp, then platelets are injected into the scalp directly. Most patients tolerate this procedure well.
Who are Suitable Candidates?
- Patients are best suited for PRP if they are experiencing early stages of hair loss or thinning. Results are best when the hair follicle is still present and can be stimulated by PRP.
- If you would like a nonsurgical option to hair loss; this may be the ideal treatment for you.
- Patients who have bleeding disorders or blood conditions such as low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), types of anemia, or thalassemia are NOT candidates for PRP treatment.
- Patients with an active infection or systemic disorder are NOT candidates for treatment.
Timing and Expectations
We recommend at least 3-4 treatments approximately 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. Afterwards, you may choose to do treatments every 3-6 months for maintenance. The hair cycle varies for different areas of the body. It can take up to 3 months to start to see results for hair restoration of the scalp.
